I was diagnosed in 2020, after over 10 years of issues with my body. I'd been doing yoga for years to help my symptoms, building strength and stability and well as a mental calm. It wasn't until after a huge flare up and a lot of muscle wastage did I really start to bring the lessons I learned from yoga off the mat and into my strength training and everyday life.
I don't believe yoga will fix everything, but I do believe yoga can help most both physically and mentally. Hence, The Chronic Yogini was born. I am the Chronic Yogini. I have a chronic disease, I'm chronically trying to reach my goals and I'm chronically fed up that the fitness industry is tailored to people who are healthy. A yogini, in modern times this is typically the term for a female yoga practitioner but going back to its origins yoginis were powerful and sacred forces, incarnates of the goddess Parvati.
I focus on the mind and body benefits of yoga for those recovering from injury, living with chronic conditions, adapting to their changing bodies and those who are injury free and want to stay that way. Literally every body.
My goal is to use my experience living a chronic illness, my knowledge from my academic background and my own yoga journey to create a safe space for you to explore and understand your own body. This then provides the basis for you to build sustainably towards your goals, whatever they may be.
Yoga doesn't have to look or feel a certain way, it is your practice, to take from what you need each and every time you step on the mat. Just like no day is the same, no body is the same. In my classes, I like to give lots of options for you to take what suits you in the moment. I actively encourage questions: learning is a collaborative process, and I welcome challenges as I don't have all the answers (no one does!) I value your curiosity and insights as we follow our own yoga journeys together.
My Approach
Explore
As a yoga teacher, my approach revolves around empowering you through self-enquiry. I firmly believe that you are the expert on your body, and help you on your journey to knowing, understanding and taking action that is best for your body. I hope to create an inclusive and dynamic learning environment.
Listen
Once we know what is happening in our body, we can start to figure out what our unique selves need. What's good for us on one day might not be good on another, likewise what's good for one side of the body might not be for the other. I aim for yoga to be a personalised experience that works for you, seeing myself as a guide and not a dictator during classes. Feel free to take breaks, hydrate, or modify asanas at any point so the practice matches what you need. I provide various options throughout class, including the use of props (whether that's formal yoga equipment or home versions!)
Build
With knowledge of our body and the insight into what that means for us, we can start to push ourselves and work further towards our own functional fitness goals. How we build towards those goals is unique to us, but not out of reach with the information we have of our own changing body.
How I Teach
Function, not Aesthetic.
I embrace a functional approach to my yoga teaching and practice, embracing diversity and uniqueness and challenging the "way it's always been". I emphasise that there is no singular way to do yoga, rejecting the notion that your yoga has to look a certain way or being "Instagram-able", but a tool to help you live your best life.
Empowering, not Dictating.
I encourage you to explore what works for your body each time you step onto the mat and to see yoga as a journey of the mind and body, not a destination. I empower you to understand what you need, which might be different each day, to keep you safe, strong and injury free on and off the mat.
Safe and Inclusive, not Competitive.
My philosophy centres around the idea of taking what serves you and leaving behind what doesn't, allowing for a personalised and adaptable practice. I strive to create a safe and open space for exploration and questioning, fostering an environment where individuals can genuinely understand and connect with their bodies and minds.
